Barber Ella Shop 2014: come on over and go with the flow

Yes, that’s right, the sci-fi-themed, mohawk-specializing barber shop you know and love is returning to Burning Man for it’s fourth year in 2014! We can’t wait to meet you, bond over tales of dust storms, and then do crazy things to your hair.

In the past, Barber Ella Shop has been located in the 9:00 plaza. This time around, we’re aiming for something a bit more mellow: quieter placement, less official open hours, and more wacky and meaningful interactions with our visitors. If you’re hoping to swing by the shop this year — and we hope you are! — we encourage you to check out our listings in the What/When/Where to see where we’ve landed and what sorts of goofy, hair-related antics to come check out.

See you on the playa!

Barber Ella Shop is back for 2013!

For the third year in the row Barber Ella Shop, our sexy little sci-fi barber shop, will be back on the playa giving out awesome haircuts. Once again, you’ll find us in the 9:00 plaza, and once again we’ll be open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday to Friday morning. Walk-ins are welcome. The sass is free. Here’s our What/When/Where listing for more details.

Are you a professional stylist in non-playa life? As in years past, we’re putting out a call for any and all pros who’d like to come volunteer. No need to sign up ahead of time or bring your own equipment. It’s a great way to give back to the community — plus it’s a chance to get creative with your craft (see: people want some wacky haircuts). Join us!

Or maybe you’re a theme camp stationed in the 9:00 zone, a member of the org, or a buddy of one of the Barber Ellas. Monday is friends and neighbors day. Stop by before the gates open Sunday night to get the details on a special before-it-was-cool haircut.

Barber Ella Shop 2012: take that, hair!

Last year was a busy one for us at Barber Ella Shop. We tripled the size of our shop, added a lot of new behind the scenes infrastructure, overhauled our approach to lines, and gave out nearly 200 haircuts! After some much-needed rest, we’re back up and organizing, getting ready and excited for 2013.

Hopefully you’ll find all the things you love (you love us, right?) about Barber Ella Shop on the playa again this year. As always, we’ll be giving out crazy haircuts left and right. Most likely, our open hours will be Tuesday through Friday mornings. Show up at 10:00 to get your name on our list, which fills up fast. Hopefully we’ll also have some new equipment that allows us to shave more intricate patterns, so start brainstorming about what you want your scalp to say about YOU.

Above is last year’s crew, telling our less friendly visitors to check out the corner of 5:00 and Fu… I mean, to have a lovely day on the playa.

The Intergalactic Wishlist of Love!

It’s true: We did not meet our goal for Barber Ella on Kickstarter. Though we’re sad to not have earned the funding, we’re as determined as ever to bring the space-age haircutting experience back to Burning Man, and make it better than ever!

A few of our backers asked if there was another way to help out. And in fact there is! We’ve put together an Amazon Wishlist of materials we’ll be needing for the camp:

The Barber Ella Intergalactic Wishlist of Love!

Some are specific to haircutting. Some are general infrastructure. All of them will help us be the best little barber shop in Black Rock for years to come.

To everyone who backed us: THANK YOU. Even though we didn’t make it, each and every one of your contributions meant the world to us. Barber Ella is about the community, and you fine folks are as much that community as anyone who stands in line midday in the desert, waiting for the mohawk of their dreams.

So once again, thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts. Vamos a la Playa!

Last year’s awesomeness, photographed

We gave out more than 150 snazzy, bizarre, transformative playa haircuts in 2011. Here are just a few highlights of our barber shop, our enthusiastic clientele, and our happy, dusty haircuttees.

Barber Ella Shop is back for 2012

Our inter-planterary playa salon was a great success at Burning Man in 2011. We gave more than 150 haircuts, made tons of new friends in the vibrant 9:00 plaza, and were proud to see many of our hand-crafted mohawks roaming the playa.

That’s why we’ll be back again at this year’s event, Burning Man 2012. Despite the ticket troubles that many camps have faced, we’re prepared to persevere — and even to step up our haircutting game. Here are some of the exciting additions we have planned:

– Expanded barber shop: Last year our humble frontage was pretty cramped (a high-class problem when you’re just so darn popular). This year’s shop will be three times the size, with a full waiting area for on-deck haircuttees to chill in the shade.

– More haircutters, more haircuttees. With a bigger shop, we can double the number of salon stations from 3 to 6. That means Burners can move through the system faster, and more people can get their hair awesomely did.

– Extended hours: Instead of operating for three hours each afternoon, we’re hoping to stay open four hours each morning.

– No more lines: We were thrilled that so many people wanted their hairs cut in 2011, but a lot of folks stood in the hot sun for hours only to miss the cut-off. This year, we’ve got a sign-up system that will cut down on wait time, frustration, and sunburn.

– Fancier frontage: We’re a pretty new camp, so we’re still building our reserve of awesome decorations. This year you’ll see more lights, flashier barber poles, vinyl posters of a burner Barbarella, more sci-fi decor, and a second TV for watching sexy B movies.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Help us make Barber Ella awesome!

Oh yes, we’re fund raising. Our Kickstarter is live, and features a video of Scott wearing many wigs. Check it out, and maybe even consider becoming one of our backers!

Why are we fund raising? We were thrilled to learn recently that Burning Man is placing us in the bustling 9:00 plaza. Thus far, the Barber Ella campmates have put lots of hard work and creative energy into the project: a true labor of love. Now though, we’re hoping to expand our budget to fit our exciting location — to turn our humble haircuttery into a shop that’s shinier, sexier, and most importantly more accessible. Haircuts for all!
